Yellowstone

Volcano
Terrible and beautiful
Full of life
In the shadow of extinction

Mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles
Mountains, trees, and lakes

Signing in
In case we don’t come back

The sight of an eagle
Soaring below me

The shape of a bear
Halfway up the mountain

Both might as well be
Worlds apart

Rotten egg smell
Exploding water
Cascades to
Make the heart stop

This place will someday kill us all

In these less dramatic moments
It merely takes my breath
Away
