Apophis (for Luis Ricardo Falero)

The end will come without noise
like leaves falling aimlessly
in the autumn wind
Or the soft whisper
of a woman’s clothing
in the presence of her love

The end will come in a sudden flash of light
and then one final embrace,
an entwining,
in the dark

Only the children who bear our names,
these seeds that we have sown and scattered abroad,
will see it and stand
to make final report
of who we were
before the dragon that rises once again
